Cooper’s hawk and bluejay
September 22, 2026
A squirrel caught our attention when it started crawling up towards a preening Cooper’s Hawk. The squirrel crept up, flinching often, as the hawk watched leerily. Once the rodent had gotten too close, the hawk slowly stretched her wings in an effort to scare off the furry, curious dare-devil. Eventually, the squirrel lost interest and made a careful retreat – his strangely indifferent gaze locked on the hawk as he crept back.
Moments later, the hawk was back in the tree with a dead bluejay, ripping off pieces with relish. The bluejay was well and truly dead; it showed not a sign of life.
